Physiotherapists are qualified in physical therapy and that means they are able to help in a variety of different ways. Physiotherapy is concerned with human function and movement and maximising individual potential at any stage of life. Physiotherapists work in a wide variety of settings such as orthopaedics, intensive care, mental illness, stroke rehabilitation, occupational health and care of the elderly.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapists like Carole Paley usually work either in hospital outpatients or in private practice and they are usually concerned with rehabilitation of patients after an operation, illness or injury; the care of chronic conditions such as arthritis; relief of pain; improving the function of muscles and joints and dealing with common complaints such as overuse injuries, sports injuries and neck/back pain. Physiotherapists can also advise on posture, seating, walking aids and suitable exercise programmes.

Complementary therapies such as acupuncture are increasingly becoming an integral part of many physiotherapists treatment. The aims of complementary therapies such as acupuncture are to restore balance and facilitate the body's own healing processes and therefore these therapies combine well with traditional physiotherapy. Carole Paley specialises in acupuncture treatment and is a member of the AACP which is the Physiotherapy governing body for safe acupuncture practice. Please see the Acupuncture page for more details of this treatment.
